90x90 Compressed Molded-Rubber Tractrix Horn and Titanium Compression Driver

The RF-7 III's high-frequency section pairs a redesigned 8.5-inch square Tractrix horn with an all-new 1.75-inch titanium diaphragm compression driver to deliver Klipsch's hallmark combination of high efficiency, controlled dispersion, and low distortion through the critical 1,300Hz to 25kHz operating range. The Tractrix horn uses a circular throat that expands into a square mouth geometry, a transition that produces more uniform dispersion across both horizontal and vertical planes simultaneously compared to a conventional circular mouth horn. The 90x90-degree coverage pattern ensures consistent frequency response across a wide listening area rather than narrowing the effective sweet spot to a small center region. The compressed molded-rubber construction of the horn body, rather than the rigid plastic or aluminum used in earlier Reference Series designs, provides inherent high-frequency damping that absorbs internal reflections and reduces the coloration those reflections introduce at the upper end of the horn's operating range. The new phase plug on the compression driver equalizes acoustic path lengths from across the titanium diaphragm to the horn throat exit simultaneously, improving phase coherency and producing more linear sound pressure output at high frequencies for cleaner, more detailed treble reproduction.

The RF-7 III's low-frequency architecture addresses the three primary challenges of housing dual woofers in a single cabinet: cone distortion at high excursion, internal standing waves, and port turbulence. Each of the two 10-inch Cerametallic woofers combines a ceramic-coated cone surface with a metallic substrate for exceptional rigidity at minimal mass, resisting the breakup modes that introduce distortion in lighter or less rigid cone materials during high-excursion bass transients. A cast aluminum frame eliminates the structural resonances that stamped steel frames develop under the mechanical stress of woofer operation, and a dual shorting-ring magnet structure cancels magnetic flux modulation during cone movement for more linear cone excursion with lower distortion across the full operating range. The bifurcated enclosure physically divides the cabinet into two independent acoustic chambers, assigning each woofer and its own dedicated Tractrix port to a separate volume. This prevents the two woofers from generating shared standing wave patterns that would otherwise create frequency response anomalies in the upper bass and lower midrange region immediately below the 1,300Hz crossover point. Each of the two rear-firing Tractrix ports applies horn-expansion geometry to the port profile, minimizing air turbulence at the port exit and producing cleaner, faster low-frequency output than conventional cylindrical ports at equivalent cabinet volume.
